The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is authorized by Congress to conduct research to provide information about the best available evidence to help patients and their health care providers make more informed decisions. PCORI’s research is intended to give patients a better understanding of the prevention, treatment and care options available, and the science that supports those options.

Position Summary


The Engagement Award program is intended to bring more patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders into the research process. The goal is to support projects that will build a community that is better able to participate in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) and comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER), and to serve as channels to disseminate study results. This is central to PCORI’s mission to fund useful CER that will help patients and those who care for them make better-informed healthcare decisions.

The Director of the Engagement Award Program plays the key role in setting the strategic direction and implementation of the program Under the oversight of the Chief Engagement and Dissemination Officer, the Director links the program’s strategy to PCORI’s mission and vision and supervises a broad and diverse portfolio of projects.  The Director also leads a team of seven and sets direction for the team’s work.  The program is responsible for, in consultation with colleagues across PCORI, solicitation and review of applications, recommendation of projects for funding, and oversight of projects from award through completion.  The Director is a leader in the Engagement Department, responsible for managing the approximately $20M per year portfolio of Engagement Awards, providing a central point of contact for ensuring consistency of communications for the program, and direction for evaluating the program success.



Duties and Responsibilities


  • Accountable for effective and efficient solicitation, review, award, and management of commitments.
  • Provides the managerial direction and coordination of the program including the budget, solicitation and application, contracting, and general oversight.
  • Leads strategic planning, development, execution, and evaluation for the Engagement Awards program.
  • Aligns program goals and portfolio with PCORI’s strategic plan, Engagement Department priorities, and other departments to support rigorous patient- and stakeholder-engaged PCOR/CER.
  • Supervises a team consisting of an Associate Director, a Program Manager, 3 Program Officers, and 2 Program Associates, and their day to day work to ensure successful execution and oversight of the awards.
  • Builds and maintains a diverse network of current and prospective awardees and the broader PCORI stakeholder community.
  • Contributes feedback and guidance to current and prospective awardees on project concepts, deliverables, budgets, timelines, and evaluation plans.
  • Ensures effective partnership with internal operational stakeholders, including science, contracts management, finance, legal, and communications, as needed.
  • Manages any awardee and vendor relationships as needed to support the goals of the award program.
  • Attends Board of Governors and committee meetings to support recommendations and provide information.
  • Represents PCORI professionally by responding to inquiries and attending meetings and conferences.
  • Provides input into, participates in planning, and may lead components of the PCORI Annual Meeting.
  • Develops blogs and other presentations on engagement-related subject areas to share knowledge learned from the program.

  • Responsive: Well-honed timeliness in action is necessary for executing relatively short duration awards in a quick-moving program.


Required Experience


  • Master’s degree in a relevant field of study preferred plus at least ten years of experience.  Relevant fields of study include health policy, planning, public health, public administration, communications, or other related fields.
  • Relevant work experience includes project planning and implementation; program management; coordinating and managing award solicitations, reviews, and awards; contracts management; and, stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience working in complex organizations; familiarity with non-profit organizations, especially in the health, health research or health policy sectors, preferred.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience working with researchers and end-users of research.
