Job Description: 

Reports to: Jane Bancroft Robinson Foundation’s President & CEO. However, day-to-day management of activities will be overseen by former Black Women Thriving East of the River Initiative Co-leads.

Job Type: Up to 40 hours a week, full-time 1099 Consultant. There is flexibility to structure this position as part-time (24 to 32 hours a week) for the first 18 months of the contract. We are happy to work with the successful candidate on any capacity considerations. There is an expectation that the position will turn into a full-time employee with benefits after the 18- month contract period.

Work Location: Fully remote, COVID-19 policies are currently in place. When applicable, the potential of 1 day a week in the Washington, DC office but remote work from home is available.

About Black Women Thriving East of the River

Launched in 2019, the Black Women Thriving East of the River (BWTEotR) Initiative partnered with Black women living in Wards 7 & 8 and the community-based organizations (CBOs) that serve them to collaboratively design a series of strategies to change inequitable cancer and health-related career outcomes for women residing in these communities. By convening the most impacted individuals into issue-specific workgroups on Patient Navigation and Workforce Development, “road maps” were created to identify the root causes of cancer and career-related disparities, and design equity-focused solutions to address these in the prioritized community.

Job Summary

We seek a community-centered leader and dynamic advocate to serve as Black Women Thriving East of the River’s Executive Director. The Executive Director will lead and co-develop the initiative’s ongoing administration, program development, strategic planning, and fundraising. To be considered for the role, candidates must identify as Black Womxn and/or demonstrate a strong affinity for the unique experiences of Black women living East of the Anacostia River. In addition, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in working with Black women, especially those with the unique experiences of Black women East of the Anacostia River.

The Executive Director’s most significant role during the 18-month contract period is to lead the transition of Black Women Thriving East of the River from an initiative incubated by the Jane Bancroft Robinson Foundation to its own program with a new home or fiscal sponsor. We will defer to the Executive Director’s preference on the most ideal programmatic arrangement (i.e., where the program is housed and how it is structured).

As a result, the responsibilities below highlight two categories: specific to the first 18 months and ongoing. It is important to note that the majority of responsibilities in both lists overlap or refer to the same duties. While the successful candidate will be initially serving in the role as a consultant, the hope and expectations are for the candidate to transition to a permanent, full-time, benefits-paid employee once the new home is established. We anticipate this taking 18 months.

Responsibilities & Duties

Specific to first 18-months

  • Review and get up to speed on all Black Women Thriving East of the River relevant materials to learn about the history of the initiative, understand progress to date, and determine future key priorities to fully embrace the ethos of the initiative.
  • Identify the programmatic arrangement for a new home, negotiate the terms, and develop a transition plan.
  • Identify priority team member positions and initiate hiring processes to secure consultant capacity.
  • Review, modify, and operationalize the details of the initiative's governance structure and ongoing advisory support.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning for multi-level evaluation of the initiative and its subsequent interventions.
  • Contribute to final program design efforts and help select intervention implementation partners.
  • Support the development and implementation of the initiative's public rollout and strategic communications, including a public launch event, finalizing the website, and stakeholder development.
  • Contribute to the initial development and implementation steps of a fundraising strategy for the initiative's new home operations and intervention implementation. In addition to a multi-year, general operating grant for the launch of the new home, JBRF staff will also connect with their networks and philanthropic relations to support initial fundraising and collective impact efforts.


  • Identify, develop, and implement strategic plans to promote the program's mission, vision, and values.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders, including the East of the River community, DMV-based non-profits, and funders, to ensure program success and growth.
  • Hire, mentor, develop, and manage a talented and diverse team of employees to build and achieve success in strategic and daily operations.
  • Evaluate operational needs to develop, maintain, and improve program and staff efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain the program's culture and promotes anti-racist principles, racial equity, transparency, and collaboration.
  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence aligned with racial justice and equity, intentional program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems.
  • Direct and oversee the program's fundraising and development strategy, goals, and implementation by stewarding funder relationships and broadening funding sources.

Required Skills & Qualifications


  • Candidates must identify as Black womxn and/or demonstrate a strong affinity for the unique experiences of Black women living East of the Anacostia River. 
  • Priority is given to candidates who are Native Washingtonians. At a minimum, candidates must have long-term and/or generational ties to Washington, D.C., with a deep understanding of the dynamics of the East of the River communities.
  • A degree is not required to apply for this position. The Black Women Thriving East of the River initiative recognizes that lived experience is expertise.
  • Ability to apply racial equity, anti-racism, and community engagement lenses to all aspects of the work.
  • Experience developing and managing financial operations and budgets.
  • Proven track record of intentionally and genuinely engaging with people and sharing power to coach, manage, and develop teams and individuals.
  • Experience launching, building, and overseeing a program or organization.
  • Commitment to quality program design and clear and accessible data evaluation.
  • Robust and diverse networks, including ties to East of the River communities. Ability to build coalitions and develop partnerships.
  • Experience working with the D.C. non-profit sector.
  • Experience working with the health or workforce development fields.
  • Proven track record of effectively working with Black women, especially the unique experiences of those living East of the River.

Nice to have:

  • Strong communications skills; are a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Demonstrated track record of supporting local and anti-racist hiring practices to create a sustainable and diverse staff structure.
  • Experience working with partners to support and drive advocacy and policy.
  • Ability to assess, disrupt, and transform systems.


  • 18-Month Contract Period: $243,750 – $300,000
