Position Description
Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Director, Engineering Initiatives (Director) will play a critical role in leading the execution of the Clark Foundation’s engineering programs, one of the Foundation’s core strategic priorities. The Director is responsible for managing the Clark Foundation’s relationships with higher education institutions, including the Clark Engineering Scholars program and the Clark Foundation’s multi-year and multi-program investment of nearly $220M to the University of Maryland at College Park and the A. James Clark School of Engineering.
The ideal candidate will bring direct experience in higher education administration and/or demonstrated success managing university relationships and major projects. This role is a great opportunity for an individual with executive office experience at a university, or with experience as an education account manager interfacing directly with universities, to move into philanthropy.

Leadership of the A. James Clark Scholars Program: 

  • Administer the Clark Engineering Scholars program, an engineering scholarship currently available (or in development) at 10 undergraduate institutions
  • Manage relationships with the Development Offices and Program Advisors of each partner school
  • Track data and prepare reports to share with the Clark Foundation staff and Trustees
  • Collaborate with university advisors to discuss program progress, results, and craft improvements as the programs expand, encouraging learning among the programs
  • Interface with Clark Construction on implementing an internship program and an annual meeting of Clark Scholars during their junior year
  • Lead all marketing and communication of the Clark Scholars brand, connecting with current and potential scholars
  • Work with the President and CEO to recruit more schools into the program, as desired

Management of the University of Maryland (UMD) investments:

  • Oversee all logistics of the Clark Foundation’s grant to UMD including but not limited to managing the budget of payments, handling requests between UMD and the Clark Foundation, and ensuring consistency of the Clark brand
  • Coordinate with UMD administration to accomplish all activities outlined in the grant agreement
  • Build out various programs still in their infancy (e.g. University wide Clark Promise Scholarship matching gift program)
  • Collect all required metrics and track ongoing performance of UMD against grant goals, reporting back to the President and CEO
  • Collect feedback from student and faculty beneficiaries to continually improve programs 


  • Manage various other Engineering initiatives for the Foundation (e.g. scholarship programs at Montgomery College)


  • Highly skilled project manager with impeccable attention to detail
  • Ability to translate strategy into operational plans; proven experience handling highly confidential and sensitive materials and situations
  • Experience in a complex work environment, with a higher education setting preferred, or an equivalent experience in the corporate and/or non-profit sectors
  • Demonstrated experience with the workings of a large public university preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to collaborate and partner with highly diverse internal and external populations
  • Demonstrated commitment to and passion for the Clark Foundation’s mission
