Communications and Development Specialist

Objective

The Communications and Development Specialist (CDS) position directly contributes to the growth and long-term sustainability of the organization. It is designed to enhance Grantmaker In Health’s ability to leverage new opportunities and cultivate critical relationships with a variety of audiences. Working closely with the Development Advisor and the Communications Director, the CDS’ work centers on the organization’s fundraising goals and communications with health foundations and other external stakeholders.

Core Responsibilities

Communications: Work with the Communications Director to develop the e-alert, webinar announcements, Bulletin, and other electronic communications. Manage the communications calendar and the subscription/mailing lists. Coordinate the production of the GIH Products document, annual and other reports, and office letterhead. Work alongside Communications Director to develop communications strategies, and to draft and update GIH website content.

Digital and Social Media Marketing: Manage GIH social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Serve as visionary for and experimenter with new social media channels. Design and/or support the development of graphics, artwork, and infographics for social media channels and website.

Fundraising: Manage core support renewals and non-Funding Partner appeals. As needed, work directly with Funding Partners to address any challenges, resolve questions, and maintain strong relationships. Take a prominent role with fundraising for the Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy, Terrance Keenan Institute for Emerging Leaders in Health Philanthropy, and other standing GIH events. Process all acknowledgements and ensure proper record keeping for all outreach and awards.

Development and Research: Initiate new recruitment research (identify prospects) and work with the Development Advisor to plan and implement cultivation and outreach to prospective funders, compiling information on assets, health programming, and other key characteristics. Work in collaboration with the Development Advisor, and in consultation with executive management team, to plan and implement development outreach to existing Funding Partners.

Grants: Assist Development Advisor with major grant proposals and reports. Lead grant proposals and reports associated with core renewals. Process acknowledgements for awarded grants; provide background information for development activities of president and other senior staff, as requested.

Data entry: Organize core support renewals, payments, and other funding-related details using our CRM system. Ensure clear, accurate and up-to-date records are available to all staff. Make improvements to the system to support organizational goals.

Additional Development Support: Conduct development projects under guidance of Development Advisor (e.g. keeping GIH information current on charity-focused websites, determining the timing and amount for rate adjustments, and comparing GIH practices to that of peer organizations, and partnership materials and correspondence for other philanthropy-serving organizations).

Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Communications Director and the Development Advisor.

FSLA Status: Full-time, exempt position.

ADA Specifications: This position is primarily sedentary in nature and may require the ability to bend and lift items up to 20 lbs.

Qualifications

Experienced and trustworthy with five or more years of relevant professional experience. Strong organizational and communications skills (oral and written) with the capacity to independently prioritize daily work, and assess, set, and meet deadlines. Working knowledge and understanding of Social Media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) and how each platform can be deployed. Knowledge and experience in records management, research, and data gathering techniques. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, as well as facility and comfort in using a variety of other software packages. Detail-oriented and consistent database management experience. Familiarity with web-based applications, including HTML/WordPress and listservs.

Experience providing information and assistance to outside parties. Able to conceptualize, manage, and follow through on multiple projects at one time. Familiarity with foundation grant practices, CRM or other fundraising databases, and/or donor cultivation and stewardship a plus.
