Join the United Way of the National Capital Area to learn and network with colleagues from the nonprofit, business and government sectors, United Way NCA staff, and Census experts as part of their Annual Community Meeting. The theme of this year’s Community Meeting is Census 2020 and Our Community: A Call to Action. UWNCA invites your leadership team, staff, key volunteers and board members to attend.
Every 10 years, the U.S. Constitution requires that all residents be counted through a nationwide census. The census counts our population and households, providing the basis for reapportioning congressional seats, redistricting, and distributing nearly $700 billion in federal funds to support states, counties and communities’ vital programs — impacting housing, education, transportation, employment, health care and public policy.
The threat of an inaccurate census in 2020 is very real. When children, people of color, immigrants, seniors, low-income families, and other vulnerable populations are undercounted, they are effectively made invisible. We, as community leaders and trusted messengers, each have a part in supporting the upcoming census and making sure all members of the community are heard from.
The 2020 Census is about YOU – support for your mission, for those you serve, and for the vision you pursue each day. The census affects our voice in government, how much funding our community receives, and how our community plans for the future.
Attendees will:
1. See the Big Picture: Hear why the 2020 Census is important, and how an unsuccessful census can have far-reaching consequences for both the public and private sectors.
2. Learn about Design Thinking, a process for creative problem-solving that utilizes elements from the designer’s toolkit like empathy and experimentation to arrive at innovative solutions.
3. Preview a Census Solutions Workshop and engage in design thinking activities with your colleagues to generate ideas and solutions for solving census challenges.
4. Take Action: Make a commitment to move forward in your support of the 2020 Census.
