Philip Walsh is the executive director of Maine Initiatives, a public, community-based foundation focused on progressive causes, located in Portland, ME. In their effort to promote a racial justice agenda, Maine Initiatives designed a participatory process to connect community to grantmaking, reaching across the state to engage individuals in a radically reimagined grant review process. This process not only addressed the short-term needs of a foundation with few staff, it also expansively built the commitment of individuals throughout Maine to a shared sense of racial justice. Join us to hear how Maine Initiatives developed this approach, and why they believe bringing non-traditional voices to the table is critical to the success of racial justice work.
