The XYZ Foundation is a new foundation in the Washington, D.C. region. With much anticipation and excitement, they just announced their new technology initiative focused on young students. The Foundation included one stipulation in its grant guidelines – the resources must benefit all elementary schools in the city and each would receive a sub-grant of $7,400.00.
Given our interest in racial equity, what might be the impact of this grant on black children and other children of color in the city? Does the distribution of funds equally offer the potential of equitable impact?
Earlier this year, WRAG hosted the first in a series of training sessions on how to apply a racial equity lens to grantmaking. Next, ABFE: A Philanthropic Partnership for Black Communities, will help us delve deeper, providing concrete experiences on how to use a racial equity lens that can then be translated into your day-to-day work as a program officer, foundation executive, or CSR professional. The goal is to provide you with specific tools that you can use in analyzing the drivers of racial inequity as well as the impact of your grantmaking policies and decisions on communities of color. This lens is critical because sometimes the impacts of grantmaking decisions, like the equitable distribution of available funding in the scenario above, are hidden, but have a profound effect on racial inequity.
ABFE will share tools from their Responsive Philanthropy in Black Communities Framework in two sessions. While the learning will be cumulative, attendance at both sessions is not necessary. In both sessions, participants will have an opportunity “pilot-test” the tools and discuss implications for application to their work.
Part Two: Tuesday, October 18
This session is designed to help grantmakers build theories of change or “back-maps” (diagrams that illustrate the structural causes of racial inequity for black communities and their implications for grantmaking strategies).
Part Three: Thursday, October 27
In the final session, grantmakers will be introduced to a tool that helps you carry out a “racial equity impact analysis” to understand the potential impacts of foundation policies and practices on different racial/ethnic groups. In both sessions, participants will have an opportunity to “pilot-test” the tools and discuss implications for application to their work.

Eligibility: This program is open to all staff and trustees of grantmaking organizations. Space is limited to 30 people at each event on a first come, first served basis. You do not need to have attended the June session to participate in parts 2 and 3.
