Equity has become a key topic in the philanthropic community. Many foundations are embracing equity and working to incorporate it into all aspects of their work, both internally and externally. What does this mean for foundations from a finance perspective? How are foundations incorporating equity into the investment side of the philanthropic process? How do staff handle the tension that exists between the desire to achieve equity and the need to maintain acceptable levels of risk and return? What about the role of mission-related investments or program-related investments in a foundation’s desire to achieve equity? You will leave this session with a better understanding of what equity means and how it can be applied to the finance function of your foundation. We will also look at some nontraditional ways that foundations are approaching equity on the investment side.

Speakers:
Susan Taylor Batten, President & CEO, ABFE
Stephen Franco, Senior Portfolio Manager, Socially Innovative Investing – U.S. Trust
