Skill-building
Advanced Grant Portfolio Management - March 18-19 This is the higher-level professional development opportunity that many of you have asked for. Co-sponsored with The Grantmaking School, the newly revised and refreshed "Advanced Grant Portfolio Management" course is designed to make you a more effective grantmaker.
Mary Mulcahy of the Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation calls it "a great 'how to' for any program officer, even those who have been in the field for years...the instructors were first-rate." The course has been discounted from past years' prices, and there are a few partial scholarships available. Space is limited to 30 funders.
Eighteen are needed to make the class a go. [Course Description / Registration]

Census 2010
To join The Community Foundation in funding
Census outreach efforts, please contact Angela Jones Hackley (ajoneshackley@cfncr.org) by January 29th. An undercount will cause a
funding gap that our region's grantmakers can't fill. Support for Census outreach is critical and needs to begin
immediately. Here's how you can
help ensure a complete count - with or without funding.

Unique professional development
opportunity!
Last year, WG's Washington AIDS Partnership opened one spot
on the Partnership's Steering Committee as a professional development opportunity for WG members. And it was a
great success! Julie Leibee, development associate at the Washington Area Women's Foundation served as a member of
the Partnership's Steering Committee during its fall grant round of 2009. What did she think?
"Serving on Washington AIDS Partnership's Steering Committee was a wonderful experience. I learned so
much about effective grantmaking from the other members, experts in HIV/AIDS issues, and community members. I
remain inspired by the clients, staff, and volunteers at local nonprofit organizations working in the HIV/AIDS
field."
We will be continuing this opportunity in 2010, which allows for WG members to participate in this
hands-on training without the need for your foundation/corporate giving program to place funds into the
Partnership's funding pool. Review proposals, discuss potential grantees, make site visits, meet grantmaking
colleagues, and learn the field.
We are accepting applications until February 11th, 2010. WG members should email Katy Moore, WG's
Director of Member Services, with answers to these questions:
1) How do you think this opportunity will benefit you and your foundation/corporate giving program?
2) What types of professional development do you look for from Washington Grantmakers?
One person will be chosen to serve on the Steering Committee for four months starting in March, for the
first grant round of 2010. Service will include orientation to the Partnership, participation in two Steering
Committee meetings (March 24th from 10am-2pm and June 10th from 1:30-3:30pm) where proposals will be reviewed,
discussed, and evaluated; and participation in one or two site visits.
Questions? Contact Katy Moore or Channing Wickham, Executive Director, Washington AIDS Partnership.
