FROM THE PRESIDENT

Have You Read the NCRP Report?

TLC
Tamara Lucas Copeland, President, Washington Grantmkers
Last week, Aaron Dorfman spoke to Washington Grantmakers' Board of Directors. You will recall that his organization, the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, released a report in March entitled Criteria for Philanthropy at its Best. The report elicited a great deal of conversation in the philanthropic community and in the WG boardroom.

Board members' comments focused largely on the report's inclusion of precise, expected benchmarks as well as the definition of a target audience for grants. Repeatedly, Dorfman was reminded that "giving is personal;" that marginalized communities, NCRP's target audience, are not uniformly defined; and, that assessing attainment of the benchmarks would be impossible. He responded that the goals were intended to be aspirational and that without some benchmarking, the goals would have little value.

As I watched the back and forth in the room, my takeaway was that the NCRP has raised a number of important questions and led to valuable discussions like the one at the WG Board meeting. I hope WG members will look beyond the controversial aspects, read the full report and think about how it causes us to reflect on our values, ethics, effectiveness and commitment.

Best,

In GrantCraft's Communicating for Impact Strategies for Grantmakers (April, 2009) a variety of grantmakers explain how they use communications to advance programmatic goals. If you think communications is the exclusive domain of big foundations, communications staff, or consultants, think again.
