People want to age in place, and many government policies and funds are helping them do so, but is this the best option for all individuals and communities? Are we ignoring or discouraging potential alternative housing and care options? Is DC and its surrounding suburban communities prepared for the housing, services and transportation needs of the Boomer generation?
Join the Working Group on Aging and the Community Development Support Collaborative to hear from gerontologist and geographer, Dr. Stephen Golant, professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Florida. Golant will provide a critical analysis of aging in place, especially for low-income and suburban homeowners; the challenges that need to be honestly confronted, including: cost to maintain current home, isolation, and transportation limitations; and discuss alternative housing/care settings that are a closer match to a person’s and their community’s needs.
Golant will be joined be panelists:
Following the presentation, Karen Kinney, program officer at the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation will facilitate a conversation between Dr. Golant, the panelists, and the audience to explore these critical housing/care issues.
