How long do you expect to live?

Keeping your New Year's resolutions to visit your doctor and get to the gym? No? Well, turns out that personal behavior is not the biggest predictor of your - or anyone else's - health. The attached metro map can show you right now how long you and your neighbors are likely to live.
Health and longevity have more to do with the social conditions where you live and less to do with individuals making good choices. Place matters.
Washington Grantmakers, in collaboration with the Health Working Group, invites you to a member-wide program May 16th from 11:00 - 1:30 (lunch provided) to:
- Learn the real predictors of health - the issues you work on!
- the wages and benefits we're paid (Children, Youth & Families)
- the schools we attend (Public Education)
- the neighborhoods we live in e.g. housing stock, access to parks & fresh food and
safe, walkable streets (Community Development Support Collaborative/Sustainable communities)
- View part of Unnatural Causes, a fascinating PBS documentary.
- Share local data on social, economic, environmental and other determinants of health.
- Discuss common action to improve regional well being, because the distribution of these social conditions - and their health consequences - is neither natural nor inevitable.
As WG's mission says, let's make the National Capital Region a better place to live and work! We look forward to seeing you there!
